The more creative you are, the better your skills will become. You will not be beginning quilting for very long. Quilting is contagious and before you know it, you will be creating complex pieces easily with the skills you are learning. The Easiest Beginning Quilt Pattern You Will Ever MakeThe easiest pattern for beginning quilting is the one that you only use two pieces of fabric for. The following beginning quilt pattern will take you through the steps to make your very first quilt. Follow these easy instructions and soon you will be enjoying your own handmade quilt. You will need get out or to purchase two yards of fabric. Of this fabric, you will need at least one yard of the same design in one whole piece. One yard is for the top and the other is for the bottom piece. You will also need to get a piece of cotton batting that is the same size (one yard) as the fabric. Make sure each piece of fabric is the same length and width. After you have found the fabric you will use, wash the pieces gently and dry them. This will allow for even shrinkage of both beginning quilting pieces to be used in this project. You will need to put your two pieces of fabric together matching the right side of the fabric so they're facing each other for this beginning quilting project. Place your batting on the bottom of the assemblage and start sewing. You will need to sew a seam around three of the sides and about ¾ of the last side. You can use any allowance for the seam you want. Realize that it will need to be the same around the whole beginning quilting piece. After you have finished the sewing the project, you will turn your pieces out and thru the hole you left in the last side. The batting should now be inside the two fabric pieces. You will need to make sure that it lays evenly through all of your fabric. If you need to make corrections, turn the piece inside out again and stitch where needed, then turn it again. Once you have stitched the fabric to your satisfaction, you will need to close the hole on the fourth side by hand-stitching this hole closed. Once you have finished the stitching, iron the beginning quilting piece to ensure that the batting and fabric are all flat and uniform. Trim any extra fabric around the piece. Congratulations you have just finished your first beginning quilting project! Care For Your New QuiltNow that your beginning quilting project is complete, you will need to care for it so that it will last for years to come. Washing the quilt in warm water with a mild detergent is best. If you have colors that may run, you will want to wash it in cold water instead of warm. Hang the project to dry. You can use a dryer but, it is best to set it on a low heat cycle or gentle cycle . High heat may cause the batting to wad up in the comforter and render it fairly useless. When not using the quilt, you should package it in a blanket bag so that moths, dust, and dirt can't get to the fabric. Creating your first quilt is an exciting experience and with the right technique and care, your beginning quilting project will last a lifetime! Return to Pinoak Designs Homepage |
