Notice that there are not full rows of one color except for black. We will start with the row marked by the black lines, indicating the middle of the pattern. First, count the number of stitches horizontally and then vertically in the entire picture. Vertically should = 15, horizontally = 19. Divide these numbers by 2. Vertically = 7, horizontally = 9. Count in from any side 7 stitches vertically, and 9 stitches horizontally, the stitch where the two points cross is the stitch you will start on. I counted from the Left side horizontally, and the bottom vertically as in the next example:

So, you will start stitching in white. Now, you are starting part of the way up the row, so you can either start and go up the row, or down, but you must remember to finish this row when you start back! Or you can do what I would do, which is stitch the starting stitch and then the 3 below it, and then come back up the three and skip the starting stitch and finish the top of the row and then move on to the next row. Sound difficult? As you stitch, you will understand, but I have another example to show you:

The first stitches are in blue, the second in red, and the first of the new stitches in green, and the stitches coming back through the pattern yellow.

One last reminder on cross stitch, you want your stitches all facing the same direction. If you start your stitch moving from lower right to upper left corner, all your stitches should go this way, and the same if you start from lower left to upper right corner.
Ok, next thing, backstitches. Any thick black outlines on patterns are backstitches. Your pattern will tell you what color your backstitch will be. Backstitching is just outlining your sewing. If you look at the next example you will see that you bring your thread up at 1, down at 2, up at 3, down at 4, up at 5, down at 6, up at 7, down at 8, etc.:

Notice that you will come up and down holes you have already used. Don't forget to tack the tail end of your floss under the stitches on the back side of your sewing.

Last thing. When you are ready to change colors, or your thread is nearing the end, just run the needle and thread under 2 or 3 of the stitches on the back side of your cross stitch and cut with scissors to tie off the stitching.

And that is all for learning to cross stitch!
