Although you may have loved quilts for a long time, as a beginning quilt maker you should know one very important thing. The first and foremost thing to do before you adopt quilting a hobby is to make sure you understand all that there is to it, and then put together all the required items you will need. You should find yourself fully in the middle of participating in this rewarding hobby.
Quilting Thread Choices You Have at Your Disposal
Off hand, you have three major threads to choose from: cotton quilting thread, silk quilting thread, and polyester quilting thread. Each one of these threads have their advantages and disadvantages. You need to be able to gauge which your best choice for your purpose before starting your quilt project. This way, you can make your decision regarding which one of them is actually the right one to choose to suit your needs. Your choice will depend both on your style of quilting and preference, as much as the type of quilt you are planning to make. The quilting thread you choose should match the character and type of the quilt you plan to make.
Cotton Quilting Thread
This is the most popular thread of choice because it gives an excellent look any type of quilt. The best choice of cotton thread today is the mercerized cotton thread because it has a special luster to it and is also excellent for dyeing. The biggest disadvantage with cotton thread is that it does not stretch too much. Therefore, if pulled too tight it will break. Cotton will also fade in color with time and washing, hence it might create an old and worn out look on the quit over time.
Silk Quilting Thread
Silk, is without doubt, the most beautiful of all the natural fiber threads. This is an excellent choice for quilting because the thread is strong and it is elastic. It is available in all the possible colors you might want to work with and it is fade resistant. However, one disadvantage to silk threads is they need to be washed with gentle detergents as they fade otherwise. Also, there are some eco-activists who propose that we should do away with silk threads, given the horrible way in which they are obtained.
Polyester Quilting Thread
This is a synthetic thread and there are great advantages for using this type of thread. It is strong, flexible, will not not fade over time, and it looks great in quilts. In other words, it is simply the perfect choice. To top it all, this type of thread costs a fraction of what the other types of thread cost.
As mentioned earlier, it will very much depend on you as to what type of quilting thread you choose for your quilting project.
